Positive Approach to Women’s Cancer Care
Dr. Brannon Claytor encourages consulting with plastic surgeon
Dr. Brannon Claytor, a board-certified plastic surgeon, applauds the recent increased public awareness of breast cancer testing and breast reconstruction options such as preventative double mastectomy for breast cancer patients. Dr. Claytor advocates a hands-on approach to a woman’s breast cancer care. He encourages potential patients to become familiar with the available options by consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon when first diagnosed with breast cancer and considering breast reconstruction surgery. Dr. Claytor says any woman diagnosed with breast cancer should consider consulting with a plastic surgeon to discuss reconstructive options. Dr. Claytor states, “It is best to be fully informed so you do not unintentionally rule out any reconstructive options in the future.”
One option in women’s cancer care is that if your family has a history of breast cancer, a BRCA test may be indicated. Having a BRCA genetic testing can provide women with an evaluation of their own breast or ovarian cancer risk. Genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic testing is only recommended for people with a personal history of breast cancer at age 50 or younger, of male breast cancer, of cancer in both breasts, a close family relative diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45 or younger or with ovarian cancer, of both breast and ovarian cancers on either mother’s or father’s side of the family, or if you are of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage and a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
A plastic surgeon can educate patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and plan for the best design treatment and surgical results. Insurance companies are legally bound to cover breast reconstruction surgery under federal law. Dr. Claytor states, “Women benefit from discussing reconstructive options with a plastic surgeon. Treating the cancer is most important but obtaining the best aesthetic result is also critical for a woman’s sense of being whole and feminine. “Dr. Claytor’s goal is to make his patients feel whole, feminine and healthy again after breast reconstruction surgery.
