Portsmouth, NH – Administrative staff and nurses from the Atlantic Plastic Surgery practice of Dr. Lawrence Gray, attended the 36th annual convention of the American Plastic Surgical Nurses in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from October 1st to 5th, 2010. Over 1, 600 plastic surgical nurses and staff from across the U.S. and Canada participated in this educational opportunity to better serve patients. The focus of the conference was on skill development to achieve 100% patient safety, recent advancements in cosmetic surgery that ensure the best results for patients, and relationship building with patients in order to better serve their needs and goals.
Lectures and panel discussions provided important continuing education on wound care and the importance in selecting the appropriate patient for body contouring surgery and ways to prevent complications. Also presented were new treatment options for improved patient outcomes in facial rejuvenation and instruction for determining the differences in emerging laser technologies. A photography seminar demonstrated the importance of consistent technique and proper lighting in digital photography, mostly used for breast augmentation. New to the conference, ideas for participation by surgical practices in sustainability of the environment, elicited broad enthusiasm for reducing consumption of paper and energy. Managing current trends in technology, such as Face Book, as useful tools in communicating with patients was also highlighted.
The plethora of options available in cosmetic enhancement and the confusion it produces for patients was also discussed. The panel concluded that the need to hear the individual patient’s daily habits and emotional needs was uppermost in helping them decide on the best possible choice for them personally. Our mission to focus on patient education and to deliver the highest standards of plastic surgical care is reinforced by closer and more frequent contact with patients.
