Drs. Gray, Claytor and Baker Present at Aesthetic Conference – Tummy Tucks with no Drains Needed

Tummy Tucks with no Drains Needed

San Francisco, California – Dr. Lawrence Gray, Dr. Brannon Claytor and Dr. Michael Baker presented the course, “Scarpa Sparing Abdominioplasty with Simultaneous Liposuction, No Drains Needed” at the annual meeting of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) held in New York City from April 24th to 29th, 2014. The doctors had been invited back to present this course, given for the first time last April at the same annual conference. The Aesthetic Society has nearly 2,600 members and is the leading organization of board certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. This meeting was attended by board certified plastic surgeons from across the United States and a number of foreign countries.

“Scarpa Sparing Abdominioplasty with Simultaneous Liposuction, No Drains Needed” is a technique of performing tummy tuck surgery without the use of drains, post-surgery. Dr. Lawrence Gray states that, “This procedure gives surgeons a technique to avoid using a drains. Drains are, at best, a nuisance, an extra cost, can be difficult for patients to manage and result in more office visits for patients. Patients find drains uncomfortable, clumsy and difficult to manage. The area of insertion of the drains can be an additional wound to manage. Doctors Baker, Claytor and I focus on the safety and ease of management of this technique.”

Dr. Michael Baker, board certified anesthesiologist, discussed anesthesia techniques to make this “abdominoplasty without drains” a safe outpatient procedure. Dr. Baker stressed the importance of a cooperative effort between the anesthesiologist and surgeon in order to give the patient the best possible outcome. This abdominoplasty course, which emphasized the benefits of not using drains, was the only course to include an anesthesiologist in the presentation. All three doctors, Gray, Claytor and Baker, focused on the safety of this technique, stressing the importance and benefit to the patient of the pre-operative evaluations to reduce the risk of blood clots in the legs, which is the main serious risk in a tummy tuck procedure. It now appears that that the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities, or AAAASF, is recommending the same pre-operative evaluation that Dr. Gray has been using for years to reduce the risk of blood clots to their members.

Dr. Brannon Claytor reports that tummy tucks with additional liposuction can improve the contours and shape of the abdomen. The addition of liposuction aids in preservation of lymphatic drainage, which can minimize post – operative swelling and in most cases enables the surgeon to avoid the uses of drain. Adding liposuction to this procedure also makes it less invasive and improves long-term results. The addition of liposuction is important because the combined therapy of liposuction and abdominoplasty can supplement aesthetic outcomes, offer improved body contouring and improved aesthetic proportions. Dr. Claytor spoke reviewing 100 patients and included a video of the technique in the course presentation. Dr. Lawrence Gray Presents at International Conference Update on Experience with Liposuction Breast Reduction

Cape Town, South Africa – Dr. Gray presented an update on his experience with Liposuction Breast Reduction at a conference of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, held March 21st through March 23rd, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa. Three hundred plastic surgeons attended this educational event, largely from South Africa, but many from Germany and other European countries. Dr. Gray was the only American plastic surgeon in attendance. Dr. Gray was also asked to speak at next year’s conference in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Plastic surgeons around the world have adopted this technique and are using it as their primary method for alleviating symptoms of over sized breasts, which include back, neck and shoulder pain, headaches, numbness in hands and arms, shoulder indentations, poor posture from the downward pull of the weight and painful rashes. Traditional breast reduction is also an effective procedure for eliminating these painful symptoms, however, it does leave behind a minimum of 12 inches of scarring on each breast.

As the originator and internationally recognized expert on Liposuction Breast Reduction, also known as “Scarless Breast Reduction”, Dr. Gray has performed over 1,300 in 19 years. Dr. Gray’s results show that an average volume of 800 cc’s were removing giving the patient a 2 cup reduction in bra size. Using liposuction for breast reduction makes sense because the breast is mostly fat. Fat content ranges from 61 to 74%.

Dr. Gray emphasizes the simplicity of the procedure. Scarless breast Reduction is good for all ages and ethnicities. It is a safe procedure with better results, less complications, less pain, no scarring and a quick recovery. Scarless breast reduction can also used to correct the condition of “asymmetry”, which is when a person has breast different in size from each other. More people are rejecting the conventional method. Scarless breast reduction involves no cutting and patients are up and about as soon as they feel up it, often the same or next day.

There are many other advantages. Patients retain normal sensation and the ability to breastfeed. They have improved breast shape. There is an improved ability to detect cancer with better reading of mammograms after scarless breast reduction. There is a lower incidence of breast cancer—40% reduction on breast cancer among these women who had breast reductions. Vertical mastopexy and other procedures, such as a tummy tuck, can be done at same time of Liposuction Breast Reduction. Liposuction Breast Reduction can be used as an alternative to the removal and replacement of breast implants with lower complication and less cost.

Dr. Gray concluded that Liposuction Breast Reduction is better than the conventional method, has universal appeal, is good for all over sized breast patients, is safe and effective, and has a lower rate of complications and produces a higher level of patient satisfaction with it’s lack of scarring, less pain, and quicker return to normal activity significant and cost savings in the OR. Increasing Numbers of Older Women Seeking Breast Augmentation

Portsmouth, NH – Dr. Lawrence Gray and Dr. Brannon Claytor are finding that more and more women in their 50’s are seeking breast enhancement. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure performed to increase the volume (cup size) of the breasts and to improve the shape of the breasts using silicone or saline breast implants. Up until the past few years, most women who had breast augmentation have been in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Now, a significant number of women are having the procedure in their 50s and older, although their goals are sometimes different from the younger woman.

Drs. Gray and Claytor have a thorough discussion with the older woman to determine what her goals are: correction of volume, correction of shape, or correction of sagging breasts. The woman may simply want to increase the volume of her breast tissue, in which case, breast augmentation is the proper procedure. If the woman is looking to reduce sagging breasts as a result of age or is unhappy with the position or downward turn of her nipples, then a breast lift may be the more beneficial procedure. Oftentimes women have a breast lift along with breast augmentation. A breast augmentation with lift can be performed if the woman wants to increase the volume as well as correction of the shape or position of her breasts. Conversely, women who are seeking breast lift are often candidates for breast implants to recreate adequate volume in the breast tissue that has deflated with age.

Drs. Gray and Claytor, both board certified plastic surgeons, report that it is entirely safe for any women who is healthy enough for surgery to have breast augmentation, whatever her age. Many older women are in the best shape of their lives, but if they are not in good health, the woman may not be a good candidate for surgery. Drs. Gray and Claytor spend time talking to the potential patient about her general health and also whether or not her skin seems to heal as well as it did when she were younger. The elasticity of the skin can have an impact on how well breasts are able to support breast implants, and can affect quality and longevity of results. Both Dr. Gray and Dr. Claytor caution against smoking, which significantly diminishes skin health.

Over the past two decades, cosmetic surgery has changed and our attitudes toward it have relaxed. More and more people are making improvements to their appearance, notably, women past 50. Factors easing the choice for older patients to have a breast augmentation or another plastic surgical procedure is that the older patient is usually quite pleased that they are able to return to work or other activities quickly. They also like having breast augmentation or other procedures, such as tummy tuck or liposuction in a modern, private out patient surgical facility rather than a hospital. Dr. Lawrence Gray to present at ISAPS Meeting in South Africa update on Liposuction Breast Reduction

Update on Liposuction Breast Reduction

Portsmouth, NH – Dr. Lawrence N. Gray has been invited to speak at a conference of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to be held March 21st through 23rd, 2014 in CapeTown, South Africa. This conference will be attended by plastic surgeons from countries around the world. Dr. Gray’s presentation will be entitled, “An Update on Liposuction Breast Reduction“. Liposuction Breast Reduction is also referred to as “Scarless Breast Reduction“.

Dr. Lawrence Gray is the originator and nationally recognized expert on Scarless Breast Reduction and has been performing this type of breast reduction using liposuction for over 17 years. This method features two very small incisions of about one quarter inch in length on each breast in contrast to the 12 inches of scarring from the traditional method. Women with overly large breasts frequently suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain resulting from breasts’ excessive weight, headaches, numbness in hands and arms, shoulders indentations, poor posture from the downward pull of the weight and painful rashes underneath the breasts.

Dr. Gray has performed over 1300 liposuction-only breast reduction cases since 1995. The first 500 cases were liposuction-only. Since that time Dr. Gray has been performing mastopexy, also referred to as a breast lift, simultaneously with Liposuction Breast Reduction, which offers the patient a significant and more desirable nipple elevation.

At the ISAPS meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Gray will discuss indications, technique, results and complications. Dr. Gray’s presentation will also include the new use of liposuction-only breast reduction with implants in place. Over the past year, it has been offered as an alternative to implant exchange or with implants and mastopexy for patients with pstosis (sagging). Liposuction can reduce the size without the expense of changing implants. By avoiding change of implants, the costs and risks are reduced. Dr. Gray will focus on the simplicity of the procedure. Any surgeon performing liposuction can quickly perform the technique. Mammograms can be useful to determine the amount of fat in the breast leading to predictable outcomes. Lipo-Abdominoplasty Course Selected For New Educational Program at ASAPS Conference

Portsmouth, NH – Dr. Brannon’s Claytor’s and Dr. Lawrence Gray’s course, “Scarpa Sparing Abdominoplasty with Concomitant Liposuction; No Drains Needed”, has been selected to be a part of a new education program, the Aesthetic Immersion Modules (AIM), at The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) to be held in San Francisco, California, April 2014. The goal of AIM is to create an ongoing learning environment for the attending board certified plastic surgeons. Participating surgeons will attend the course at the conference and then continue the educational experience throughout the year in webinars and online discussions via RADAR, the Aesthetic Society’s resource library application.

“Scarpa Sparing Abdominoplasty with Concomitant Liposuction; No Drains Needed” is also referred to as “Tummy Tuck Using No Drains”. This new method of performing of abdominoplasty, as it states, uses no drains and eliminates the space for fluid to accumulate. Tummy Tuck Using No Drains first removes fat by liposuction from the abdomen, then removes excess skin, and lastly, tightens the muscle of the abdominal wall and the skin of the abdomen. Muscle is tightened from the breast bone to the pubic bone and extra skin and fat are removed. The remaining skin is sewn together, closing the space and leaving no room for fluid to accumulate. This technique allows for sculpting of the abdominal wall while simultaneously performing the tummy tuck. The lateral flanks of the abdomen can be contoured to shape the patient’s figure to the aesthetic hour-glass silhouette. This surgical technique preserves the body’s ability to remove fluid internally, obviating the need for drains. Dr. Claytor reports that patients are grateful for a surgical technique, which does not need drains.

This procedure has important benefits: It gives surgeons a technique to avoid the use of drains when performing a tummy tuck. Tummy tucks, no drains with liposuction at the same time can improve the contours and shape of the abdomen and overall body proportion. The sculpting of the abdominal wall is very appealing to patients. Patients are up and about in just a few days. Patients are much more comfortable without drains being attached and having to empty them or have the surgeon withdraw fluid. This method also results in less pain after surgery, and provides a quicker recovery, of critical importance to patients.

Other courses featured at the Aesthetic Meeting in April 2014, will be an AIM series in Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Breast Augmentation and Abdominoplasty. Each AIM series will be comprised of 3 courses. Plastic surgeons will be able to take one course or they complete all three courses in the series over 3-5 years and receive a certificate of completion. Each course series will have a Module leader who will be leading the online discussions and webinars in between annual meetings. The launch of the Aesthetic Immersion Modules program is expected to help intensify the learning experience for conference attendees. Dr. Claytor states, “We are pleased to be invited back to the ASAPS meeting again this year to present our work. We take the responsibility to participate in the AIM program very seriously and look forward to teaching other board certified plastic surgeons from around the country and the world our technique. We have studied the surgical technique and analyzed our outcomes with attention to maximizing patient satisfaction in addition to special consideration for patient safety.”
